Emerging

The child is a seething mass of contradictions. She towers over her peers and wears her bra as though it’s a badge of honour. She longs to shave her legs and wax her eyebrows, yet she sleeps with stuffed toys. She can play for hours with her cats, or develop long, involved dramas with her toys, yet she can take part and contribute meaningfully to ‘adult’ conversations. She is politically aware and discusses the machinations of the election process. She has reached her own conclusions about global warming (’sounds like a load of shit to me’) yet she still faithfully puts her lost teeth in a glass of water for the Tooth Fairy and can’t quite let go of Santa.

She is witty, writes beautifully and makes scathing observations of all she sees, yet just occasionally she will be watching a scary movie, and ask for reassurance that it is only a movie, and therefore not real. She is charming, outgoing, attractive and confident, yet insecure. She is unsure of who her true friends are, and has a very complicated relationship with her grandmother. She has a very mature sense of humour and can laugh at herself, but laughs out loud at toilet humour. She finds farts very, very funny indeed. She fiercely pursues independence at every opportunity, yet cries when the bus leaves for camp.

She is tempestuous, tentative: she is ten.

  1. You summed her up perfectly!
Isn’t ten an age of contradictions?

  2. Ah yes… the age of “tweens”- not really a teenager, but not really a little kid anymore. Isn’t it maddening? LOL

Loved how you used the contrasts in your post to describe your daughter. Excellent writing! (I’m an English major! :-) )

Thanks for sharing your post with the GWP! I loved reading it.
